We want to democratize information in Nepal by making it easy to access data, while also providing tools to visualize and draw useful insights from data.
In Nepal, most of the important information is locked or their availability is fragmented and heterogeneous. Systematic archival of data is not available via a single-window, and when it is, drawing useful information from it is challenging.
db2map is integrating multiple sources of data and information that includes- government statistical data, authentic open data, spatial data, scientific output data, field level data and crowd-sourced data and present it in a form that is easy
We do realize that providing access to data is not enough. There is a rising need for tools that can turn this data into insights and also develop insights into exchangeable commodities. This encompasses our product's objectives.
With db2map we want to eliminate technical, financial and cultural barriers in accessing, visualizing and disseminating information, and develop engagement strategies to ensure active participation by various stakeholders
With db2map, we want to:
- Be a one stop platform to leverage statistical and geospatial information
- Provide easy-to-use tools to create map and geo-based visualization applications for resource management, planning, and development activities
- Support decision making, explore new product and service offerings
Target Location :Nepal
Target Audience :Journalists, social groups, NGOs/INGOs, Researchers, University students
We believe that many individuals and institutions are capable of bringing about a positive change in the society. Access to information and the ability to dig insights from it it will provide stakeholders with the power to make smarter decisions.
db2map will provide a mix of direct and indirect benefits.
• Bring in transparency and accountability in public systems, through dissemination of public data, resulting in improved public sector performance;
• Empower community leaders, the media and policy makers—with evidence based knowledge and a platform through which they can work together to address developmental challenges;
• Enhance the efficiency of industries, education and research;
• Empower individuals as economic actors by supporting decision making capabilities;
Early Feedbacks from People:
In the last couple of months our drag&drop map-making tool (proof of concept) has been used by 19 institutions and more than 700 maps have been developed.
With the interest of getting their data visualized individuals and organizations have also asked us to provide custom map based application and infographic services.
Apart from this, many journalists and infomration collection organization have helped us to start working over an inceident reprorting tool which will help anyone report incidences around a map in the easiest possible way.
Business PlanEstimated Human Resources :
Currently we have 5 people in the team, mostly working part time. With growing requirements we would have to scale up to 14 very soon with at least half of them being full time. This team will be a mix of - data scientists, GIS experts, software engineers in the tech domain and apart from this we will require in-house journalists, content developers and T shaped executives with a broad knowledge of various sectors to be able to understand custom requirements of our potential clients which work in different domains.
Many organizations collect a lot information which only lasts till the project lasts. Besides, due to lack of data visualization tools some important insights are often missed in communication.
The purpose of DB2MAP is to come up with an interactive infrastructure which hosts useful data, along with capability to visualize it. With demand for visualization organiaztions are sharing their data fro us and in most of the cases allows for providing much higher visibility to theri data. thus we are able to centralize a lot of information on Nepal with us.
Centralizing data allows lesser efforts in collecting information, allows for more efficient and effective research. And thus dual-purpose could be resolved with DB2MAP.
In South Asia, potential of open data has hardly been harnessed. While most data remains locked, the available data is not available in easily usable formats. More importantly, capabilities like data
visualization and import and export tools, which add real value to database, are almost nonexistent.
Some efforts are being made, but only by agencies that develop these applications for their own purposes, rendering them unappealing for others.
Nepal alone has more than 12 open data/knowledge initiatives, but all have shown limited success. Unable to engage a big majority of stakeholders, whom such initiatives are meant to benefit, the mass has remained isolated from public knowledge and potential benefits that it could bring along.
Our webplatform is integrating multiple sources of data and information that includesgovernment
statistical data, authentic open data, including spatial data, scientific output data, ancillary and field level data and crowdsourced data.
We realize that providing access to this data is not enough. There is a rising need for tools that can turn this data into insights and also develop insights into exchangeable commodities. This encompasses
our product's objectives.
We will eliminate technical, financial and cultural barriers in accessing, visualizing and disseminating information, and develop engagement strategies to ensure active participation by various stakeholders.

Product enhancement; host sceintific data and add geosptail tools to the service capabilities; start serving private enterprises with our tools to help prosper economic activities.
Market Research :
So far we have reached out to 50 organizations off which more than 40 have shown enthusiasm to use the product and half of them have started making maps using our tool. A few have them have already started approaching us for customized solutions for map based applications and data collection tools.
Across Nepal, there are more than 1500 institutions who could bring these tools to their use. Many of them have been spending a significant amount annually on data and visualization making it an overall attractive market.
Intended Customer :
We will help researchers, social groups, civil society, local media and the general public, who have a strong role to play in nation building, but lack access to information and the right analytical and communication tools.
Technology Required :
Since we will be developing a tech platform ourselves, we wont be requiring many technologies from outside. But within db2map we will be requiring human resources that will have strong GIS, data analytics, data management and data mining abilities to be able to develop a system which becomes capable of solving Nepal's problems using data.
